Alvarez guitars were established in the late 1960s when Gene Kornblum of St. Louis Music partnered with Master Luthier Kazuo Yairi, who crafted handmade classical guitars in Japan. Together, they developed and imported steel-string acoustic guitars to the U.S., branded as "Alvarez," combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design.
